The Dayara Bugyal Trek is one of the most scenic and beginner-friendly Himalayan treks located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Famous for its vast rolling alpine meadows, panoramic Himalayan views, and gentle trekking trails, Dayara Bugyal offers a perfect introduction to high-altitude trekking for both beginners and experienced hikers.
In the local Garhwali language, “Bugyal” refers to high-altitude meadows that remain covered with lush grass during summer and turn into snowy landscapes in winter. Dayara Bugyal is considered one of the largest and most beautiful bugyals in India, spread across wide undulating slopes at an altitude of about 3,408 meters (11,180 ft) above sea level.
The trek moves through a variety of landscapes, starting with traditional Himalayan villages, followed by dense forests of oak, pine, maple, and rhododendron, eventually opening into expansive alpine grasslands that stretch for kilometers.
During summer months, these meadows turn into lush green carpets filled with wildflowers and grazing livestock belonging to local shepherd communities. In winter, heavy snowfall transforms the region into a white wonderland, making it a popular destination for snow trekking and beginner skiing.
The journey begins from Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand. Trekkers are picked up early in the morning at 6:30 AM from Live Free Hostel.
The drive is long but extremely scenic as the road slowly leaves the plains and enters the Garhwal Himalayas. The route passes through winding mountain roads, deep valleys, and charming Himalayan towns. The drive follows the beautiful Bhagirathi River valley, offering breathtaking views of river gorges and terraced farms carved into the mountains.
As the journey continues, the landscape gradually changes from busy towns to peaceful mountain villages. After reaching Uttarkashi, the road climbs higher towards Raithal, the base village for the trek.
Raithal is a beautiful Himalayan village located at around 7,142 ft, surrounded by forests and overlooking the majestic Bandarpoonch range. The village offers a perfect introduction to Garhwali culture with its traditional wooden houses, small temples, and peaceful atmosphere.
Trekkers usually reach Raithal by evening, where the trekking team conducts a briefing session about the upcoming trek. The night is spent in a homestay or basecamp while enjoying a warm meal and the fresh mountain air.
The first trekking day begins with a gradual climb from the village of Raithal into the forested slopes of the Garhwal Himalayas.
The trail initially passes through terraced farmland and small shepherd trails before entering dense forests of oak, maple, and rhododendron trees. During spring, these forests bloom with bright red rhododendron flowers, creating a vibrant and colorful landscape.
As trekkers gain altitude, the views of the valley behind begin to open up. The snow-covered peaks of the Bandarpoonch range slowly start appearing above the forest canopy.
After a steady ascent through the forest trail, trekkers reach the beautiful Gui campsite, located at around 9,630 ft. Gui is a peaceful clearing surrounded by tall trees and open slopes, making it a perfect camping spot.
Nearby lies the small Gui Lake, a seasonal high-altitude lake that adds charm to the campsite. From this campsite, trekkers can enjoy their first close views of the Himalayan peaks.
The evening at Gui is calm and magical, with cool mountain air, star-filled skies, and the sounds of the forest around the campsite.
The trail gradually climbs above the tree line, where dense forests begin to open into wide alpine meadows. This is the first moment when trekkers truly experience the magical landscape of Dayara Bugyal.
The terrain changes dramatically as green slopes stretch endlessly across the mountainside. These high-altitude meadows are known as Bugyals, and they are among the most stunning natural landscapes in the Himalayas.
Along the way, trekkers enjoy panoramic views of towering Himalayan peaks including Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag, and Draupadi Ka Danda.
After a relaxed trek through rolling meadows and open ridges, the trail reaches Chilapada campsite, located at 10,515 ft. This campsite sits on a wide alpine slope with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
In the evening, trekkers can explore the meadow, watch the sunset over the snow peaks, and enjoy the peaceful Himalayan environment.
This is the most exciting and scenic day of the trek, as trekkers reach the highest point of the journey.
The trail from Chilapada gradually climbs across the vast meadows of Dayara Bugyal, eventually reaching Dayara Top, located at approximately 11,830 ft.
From the summit area, trekkers are rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayas. Massive snow-covered peaks dominate the skyline, and the endless alpine meadows stretch across the slopes below.
The sense of openness and space at Dayara Bugyal is truly unique, as trekkers can walk freely across the rolling grasslands rather than follow a narrow trail.
After spending time at the top and enjoying the views, the trek begins its descent towards Nayata campsite, passing through beautiful slopes and forest sections.
Nayata is located at around 9,186 ft, surrounded by peaceful forest landscapes and open clearings where trekkers camp for the night.
The final trekking day involves a gradual descent back to the base village of Raithal.
The trail passes through beautiful forest paths filled with oak and rhododendron trees. As trekkers descend, the air becomes warmer and the landscape transitions from alpine wilderness back to cultivated mountain villages.
Along the way, trekkers may see shepherd trails, grazing animals, and views of the valleys below.
After a relaxed descent, the group arrives back at Raithal village, where the trek officially concludes. The evening is spent resting at the basecamp, sharing stories of the trek, and enjoying the final night in the Himalayas.
After breakfast, trekkers begin the return journey from Raithal back to Dehradun.
The drive again follows the scenic mountain roads of the Bhagirathi valley, passing through forests, rivers, and small Himalayan towns.
Trekkers usually reach Dehradun by around 6 PM, marking the end of an unforgettable Himalayan adventure through one of the most beautiful alpine meadows in India.
