Gulabi Kantha is a serene and beginner-friendly Himalayan trek located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, starting from Hanuman Chatti near the Yamunotri route. This trek is known for its gentle ascent, making it perfect for first-time trekkers, solo travelers, and those who want to experience the Himalayas without extreme difficulty. The trail takes you through dense oak and pine forests, quiet mountain villages, open alpine meadows, and high-altitude ridgelines, gradually revealing breathtaking views of majestic peaks like Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, and Black Peak. With fewer crowds and untouched landscapes, Gulabi Kantha offers a raw and peaceful mountain experience that feels deeply connected to nature.
What truly makes Gulabi Kantha special is the magical color transformation of its meadows and mountain slopes during sunrise and sunset. As the first and last rays of the sun touch the grasslands, the entire landscape glows in soft pink and golden hues—hence the name “Gulabi” (rosy). Unlike popular commercial treks, this trail remains quiet and soulful, allowing trekkers to slow down, breathe in the mountain air, and truly feel the Himalayas. The wide bugyals, uninterrupted sky views, star-filled nights, and the sense of walking through an unexplored part of Garhwal make Gulabi Kantha a perfect blend of beauty, calm, and adventure.
Your journey begins early in the morning from Dehradun with a scenic drive deep into the Garhwal Himalayas. The route takes you through Mussoorie, Naugaon, and Barkot, following winding mountain roads alongside rivers and pine-covered slopes. As you move closer to Hanuman Chatti, the air turns cooler and the surroundings quieter. By evening, you arrive at Hanuman Chatti, a peaceful mountain hamlet on the Yamunotri route. After check-in, you can take a short walk around the village, visit the local temple, and acclimatize to the altitude. Dinner is served at the guesthouse, followed by an overnight stay.
After breakfast, the trek begins from Hanuman Chatti. The trail gradually ascends through dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, offering occasional glimpses of surrounding valleys. You pass through Nishni Village, where traditional wooden houses and terraced fields give a glimpse of the local mountain lifestyle. The trail remains gentle and beginner-friendly, making it ideal for acclimatization. By afternoon, you reach Kandola, a beautiful campsite surrounded by forested slopes and open clearings. The evening is spent relaxing, enjoying hot snacks, and watching the sky change colors over the mountains. Dinner and overnight stay at the campsite.
Today’s trek takes you higher into alpine terrain. Leaving Kandola after an early breakfast, the trail opens up into wide bugyals (meadows), with fewer trees and expansive mountain views. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes more dramatic, and on clear days, peaks like Bandarpunch and Swargarohini begin to dominate the horizon. The gentle wind, open skies, and silence make this stretch deeply calming. By afternoon, you arrive at Seema Thach, a stunning high-altitude meadow surrounded by ridgelines. The rest of the day is for rest, acclimatization, and soaking in sunset views. Dinner and overnight stay at Seema Thach.
(Trek | Summit Altitude: 3,900 m)**
This is the most exciting and rewarding day of the trek. You start early before sunrise, trekking uphill towards the Gulabi Kantha summit. As the sun rises, the surrounding meadows and ridges glow in soft pink and golden hues, which gives Gulabi Kantha its name. From the summit, you are rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of major Himalayan peaks, endless meadows, and deep valleys below. After spending some time at the top, you descend back to Seema Thach, take a short rest, and continue trekking down to Kandola. Though long, the descent is gradual and scenic. Dinner and overnight stay at Kandola.
After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Kandola to Hanuman Chatti. The familiar forest trail feels different on the way down, offering fresh perspectives of the valley and surrounding hills. Once you reach Hanuman Chatti, the trek concludes. From here, you drive back to Dehradun, retracing the scenic mountain roads. You arrive by late evening, marking the end of a peaceful yet fulfilling Himalayan journey through the hidden beauty of Gulabi Kantha.
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. An early alpine start takes you across steep snow slopes to Bali Pass summit.
The climb involves technical sections, often requiring ropes, crampons, and ice axes. From the top, witness breathtaking views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag (Black Peak).
The descent towards Lower Damini is steep and demanding, testing endurance and focus.
The trail descends through alpine meadows and forest sections, gradually merging into the Yamunotri pilgrimage route.
Reach Yamunotri Dham, one of the four sacred Char Dhams. Trekkers may visit the temple and hot springs before concluding the trek.
